Major stamp and publisher facility burns

A fire on the night of October 17, 2001, virtually destroyed a Sullivan, Illinois stamp and print publisher. According to News-Progress, weekly Sullivan, Illinois newspaper, “the family-owned Depot Gallery and Frame Shop was destroyed. The city used 400-500,000 gallons of water on the fire, and a wind continued to feed the fire during the night. The cause of the fire has not been determined.”

Burnett Harshman, CEO, told the Decatur Herald and Review “We still have a couple of warehouses, and the gallery at Hickory Point Mall, but we had more than $2 million in inventory in here. We’ll just have to wait and see when the smoke clears.”

The Depot and later Sport ‘en Art were major publishers of many state and federal stamps and prints, leading the way for others to follow. Many know the firm by their retail name of Stamp Fulfillment Center. They were responsible for many foreign stamp programs, as well as fishing and conservation stamps and prints for states, as well as ducks.

The loss of their inventory will unquestionably have an effect on the market for stamps and prints.
