First Canadian Youth Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp

Wildlife Habitat Canada is thrilled to congratulate 14-year-old Ivy Liu from British Columbia for being selected as the winning artist for the first Canadian Youth Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp. Wildlife Habitat Canada has partnered with Robert Bateman’s Get to Know Program to create this inaugural stamp that will be sold across Canada, with proceeds supporting youth-driven wildlife conservation projects.

The Robert Bateman Get to Know Contest was created to urge youth to get outside and “get to know” their wild neighbors. This year’s contest theme was biodiversity. In addition to having her artwork featured on the stamp, Ms. Liu’s “Spirit Bears” will also be on the cover of the 2010 Robert Bateman Get to Know Contest Biodiversity Calendar.

Ivy Liu’s entry entitled, “The Beauty of Nature” depicts the Kermode or Spirit Bear, a rare sub-species of Black Bear that is not an albino. “Black Bear are distributed all across Canada but the Kermode only inhabit coastal British Columbia. They feed on Pacific Salmon which links them to the biodiversity of other ecosystems hundreds and even thousands of miles away,” said Len Ugarenko, Wildlife Habitat Canada’s President. “This underscores our direct link to the natural world since we eat salmon and other saltwater fish. Humans need healthy, biologically diverse ecosystems as much as the bears do.”
